Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American musician, actress, and rapper. Her career as a musician, film and TV artist has won her the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received an Grammy Award as well as six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot as well as Rita Owens. Both were police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who was a teacher in Irvington High School. Latifah's parents separated when she was 10 years old. Latifah was raised in the Baptist church, and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah refers to gentle and generous. Her cousin gave it to her at the age of 8. Latifah, who was 5'10" tall power forward for her high school team was always a tall girl. She sang "Home" from The Wiz in a performance in her high school. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group that launched her journey into beatboxing. Latifah was member of the Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were joined by the producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo of Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song, and then signed Latifah in 1988 for the release of her first track Wrath of My Madness.
